• It is one of two components of software, the other being data.
• Data is represented in binary form in a computer.

Binary Code Decimal (BCD)
• BCD is a binary encoding of decimal numbers.
• Each decimal digit is represented by a fixed number of bits.
• BCD can only represent 6 digits (64 characters).

Extended Binary Code Decimal Interchange Codes (EBCDIC)
• EBCDIC adds 2 more bits to represent 256 characters (28).
• ASCII codes represent 128 English characters as numbers.
• ASCII codes are used for text representation and data transfer.
